The healing method of Bio-energetics has been developed in the sixties and seventies of the 20th century by Alexander Lowen. As a medical doctor, he observed that both physical and psychological disturbances were accompanied by imbalances in bodily locomotion and the breath of patients. His conclusion: stress leads to a very superficial breath, and chronic stiffness in muscle tissue. According to Lowen, these are key factors for a whole range of symptoms that hinder people in their daily functioning, both physically and psychologically.
According to Bio-energetics, health means an ability to freely move, wherein everything inside the body also has full freedom to flow. Physical and psychological wellness act like communicating vessels: the freer the physical body can move about, the freer the mind will be to be creative. The clearer the mind, the better all physical processes are able to function correctly. Seen this way, all blockades and symptoms ultimately originate in how you deal with stress factors in your life.
Stand with your feet some 10 inches apart, rotating your feet just slightly inward. Now bend over and touch the floor with your fingers. Your knees should be bent slightly (not locked). Do not use your hands for support; all power should emanate from your feet and legs. Loosen your neck and head as much as possible.
Breathe at a calm and leisurely, regular pace, but also try to deepen your breath bit by bit, using your mouth. Place the weight of your body on the front part of your feet. Your heels may keep a short distance from the floor. Try to move your knees in such a way that you feel your hamstrings (below your thighs) reacting. Again, never lock your knees. Hold this position for about a minute as you keep breathing leisurely.
